MEET JJ (Jen)


JJ has been with the Action Potential Fitness team since before it existed! They began their fitness trainer career with Generate Fitness as a group fitness support instructor and, over time, further expanded their scope to become one of APF's Personal Fitness Trainers (Tier 1, Generalist).

While they continue to work full time as a chemist at the University of Alberta, JJ continues to teach classes, co-leading our Tuesday Small Group Strength program and is actively involved in the delivery of the Centre for Trauma Informed Fitness ' Fitness TransFormed and Fat Fit Fearless programs.

Science meets Sincerity & Support

Like most of the team members at APF, JJ has a particular interest and talent for the sciences. Having completed their Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and Forensic Sciences, JJ has spent the last decade working at the University of Alberta as a chemist.

In 2021, after undergoing a significant journey of self-exploration that included falling in love with exercise and group fitness, JJ decided to embark on the journey of becoming a certified Group Fitness instructor with Fitness Alberta (2020) and Certified Personal Trainer and Human Movement Specialist through the Brookbush Institute (2021). JJ further refined their skills by certifying as a Trauma Informed Fitness Trainer (Level 1, 2023).

JJ specializes in working with general populations, new exercisers, and those who experience anxiety or social and emotional discomfort in fitness settings. They are particularly passionate about working with 2LGTBQIA+ participants, and is a proud founding instructor for the Fitness TransFormed program.

GET TO KNOW JJ

I become a fitness professional because I wanted to help others make the transition towards embodiment and mental wellness through exercise.

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, cooking, baking, crafting and hanging out with my dog. 

My personal approach to fitness and exercise is through a trauma informed lens and weight neutral mindset and a gentle self compassionate awareness. We meet our bodies where they are at any given day.

If you are new or anxious exerciser, please know your feelings are valid. Go at your pace and comfort level. We can find always find ways for you to move your body that feel good and safer.
