MEET JAMES

James (He/They) joined the Action Potential Fitness team in June of 2021, shortly upon graduating from the NAIT Personal Fitness Trainer program. Since then, he has become an invaluable member of the community, constantly seeking ways to help create ease for his clients and team members alike, and infusing the facility with optimism, sincerity, and fun! Along with his duties as a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness instructor, James is also the Assistant Manager and helps to oversee client care and program management.

HEAVILY LIFTING FROM THE HEART

James is universally known for being the perfect balance of "head" and "heart." While passionate about the science and structure of effective fitness training, James recognizes that - for many - the relationship that exists between the client and the trainer is often even more important the exercises chosen.

James has a strong interest in exercise as a mental health intervention, and brings with him an extensive background in nutritional wellbeing from his many years of working in this complementary industry.

Since graduating from NAIT and becoming CSEP Certified in 2021, James has bolstered his qualifications by certifying as an NASM Corrective Exercise and Sports Nutritional Counselling Specialist and has recently certified with the ISSA's Bodybuilding designation.

Trauma-informed practice is at the heart of James' approach and he is particularly interested in working with populations who need a compassion-focused approach to their training or who are working towards growing more confident and secure in their fitness goals.

GET TO KNOW JAMES

I wanted to be a fitness professional as I wanted to help others. As corny as it is, all I ever wanted to do is help others and help spark joy and growth.

I wanted to give the joy of movement to others something that I didn’t always have myself. I grew up as the kid who was always picked last and gym, mostly cause I found movement to be awkward and scary. It didn’t help that I wasn’t the most social of people either. However started to find joy in movements that were less group based and more individual. Things such as swimming and weightlifting. Weightlifting be something I make very drawn to, the joy of lifting heavy.

At first only training in private in my room singing along to music, but as I started to do it more and more I try slow doing it around others till I felt more comfortable to go to a gym. I want to be able to give this joy to others to help them along their journey, to reclaim movement or claim for the first time. The best thing I think we can do in life is to grow joy and happiness and I am so thankful I found a place and a way that I can do it.

Outside of work, I do like to lift heavy things and put them down ;).

However I also one of those people that can spend hours watching cartoons to the point I have them memorized ( such as futurama, Rick and Morty and gravity falls to name a few). I love comic books and superhero’s however won’t lie that is mostly marvel based.

I love getting together with friends and having night full of board games( like unstable unicorns) or playing Mario kart. filling my time with laughs and happiness.

I love learning, I’m constantly finding new things to hyper focus on learn. As I find so important to keep learning so that I can learn more perspectives and achieve a greater understanding. That could be learning about history, different  forms of expression and cultures. One of my favourite things to learn from is philosophy I just love the exchanging of ideas and understanding how we all see the world and interact with it. Finding the similarities and the difference and learning from them.

I also love to just take long baths and singing along to musicals to relax. Though I admit I am not the best singer but I don’t care I just find so much joy in it.

My approach to fitness and exercise is that it has to be be fun to the client. While understand that we all have different definitions of what fun is. For myself that is lifting heavy, I love the feeling of lifting something heavy off my body or pull heavy things closer to myself.

However I understand that might not be everyone’s jam and that’s okay. The great thing about personal training is it just that it is personal to you. That might mean that you are more inclined to do more cardio, balance or functional movement patterns.

My role is to help support you in whatever your goals are helping to make sure you stay safe while reaching them. I believe that all body’s are meant to body and to play and explore and that never really stops in life . We might change the mode that we do these things but it’s always a part of us.

What I would want every new or anxious exercise to know is I was once you. That even now I sometimes get anxious about exercising and that’s okay. However I am here for and will be there to help build your confidence and change exercise from being scary to being fun. I will do this by starting you where are you, guiding you through but allowing you to still feel in control.

I will do this by finding what movements feel safe and gradual working on expanding what we feel safe. Till we can feel safe and find joy in new things because you will know you are capable of anything.
